Sri Lanka Fitness Test Delay: IPL Stars Ready?

The issues of concern in Sri Lanka fitness tests are pulling questions before the coming Indian premier league 2026, with numerous of the star players failing to undergo the required tests by Sri Lanka Cricket.

Some of the prominent figures include Wanindu Hasaranga and Matheesha Pathirana. Both the players are likely to appear in the IPL this season. Their current fitness status is however in doubt. This presents a possible contradiction between national obligations and franchise requirements. Only 24 centrally contracted players have passed the tests required to date. Some of the players have either missed or failed. The reasons vary. Others are struggling with injuries and others have a scheduling or logistical problem.

The case of Hasaranga seems to be more severe. He has recently been hamstring injured that happened earlier this year. His fitness test does not have a definite date. It is also reported that he had not applied yet to a no-objection certificate. This may affect his availability in his IPL franchise, Lucknow Super Giants.

Pathirana’s recovery seems more positive. He has taken up bowling again in training following a calf injury. It is increasingly becoming hopeful that he will be fit to be in Kolkata Knight Riders by mid-April.

On a bigger picture, this case illustrates a common problem in contemporary cricket. Players are juggling between international commitments and franchise leagues. Fitness protocols are becoming stricter. Boards require power, whereas leagues require accessibility. The next few days will be critical. Sri Lanka Cricket should also make sure that the fitness standards of players are met. At the same time, franchises will closely monitor developments.
