The Travis Head incident started with a heated encounter with Indian cricket star Virat Kohli on the field. But this was not the end of the story. During the ‘shake and talk’ ritual at the end of the match, Kohli was said to have not shaken hands with Travis Head but rather hello to others. This moment soon went viral and has been talked about by fans.

After the game, it went downhill in the virtual world. A stream of hurtful messages was sent to Travis Head and his wife, Jessica on Instagram. Some of the abuse apparently originated from accounts associated with Kohli’s supporters. Jessica also said that private messages she received after the incident were disturbing and that close friends and family members were also the recipient of such messages.

This incident serves as a reminder of the speed at which sporting tensions can turn to social media conduct. Competitive aggression is an integral part of the sport of cricket but the response of some online users has led to concerns about the safety of players and their families in the online environment.
