Von der Leyen sees drone alarm in the context of border violations

New York (dpa) – EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen sees the drone alert at Copenhagen Airport in the context of other provocations at the EU’s external borders. Although the situation is still being investigated, it is clear that we are dealing with a pattern of persistent challenges, she wrote after a phone call with Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. At the same time, von der Leyen warned of a threat to critical infrastructure and announced a strong and united European response to the threat.
This month, dangerous situations in the airspace of EU and NATO countries have already occurred in Poland, Romania, and Estonia. In Estonia, three armed Russian MiG-31 aircraft flew for more than ten minutes over the Baltic Sea through Estonian airspace on Friday. Previously, Russian drones had appeared in Poland and Romania. It was initially unclear where the flying objects in Copenhagen came from.
EU Council President António Costa wrote on the platform X that the EU must be able to protect its critical infrastructures. At a meeting of EU heads of state and government in early October in Copenhagen, efforts should be made to strengthen the common European defense readiness. (September 23)
