Nearly nine in ten UK IT professionals are demanding even more AI to boost automation

The UK is ahead of its European counterparts in embedding AI at work, with employees in Britain feeling the least threatened by its impact too. This is according to new research from TOPdesk, a leading global provider of IT service management solutions.

The research revealed that 75% of UK organisations have already established AI across the business, and almost half of this group (47%) say it’s already delivered measurable value. Despite this rapid transformation and much scaremongering of jobs potentially being lost to AI, only 10% feel that AI is a threat to their role – less than anywhere else in Europe.

This optimism is translating into action, with nearly nine in ten UK IT professionals (88%) asking for even more automation in their day-to-day work.

IT Teams Are Driving the UK’s AI Momentum

Much of this momentum is being driven by IT teams themselves. In 70% of UK organisations, the IT department is leading AI implementation – driving an internally driven transformation through practical solutions that boost productivity, accuracy and decision-making.

“IT teams are at the heart of this transformation,” said Hannah Salt, Head of Customer Enablement at TOPdesk. “They understand where AI can make a real difference and are using that insight to lead change with confidence. Their work is helping organisations unlock the benefits of AI in a way that’s practical and built for long-term success.”

The UK’s leadership in AI adoption is matched by its focus on people. When asked about their focus on providing a positive digital employee experience, 60% said they are going to great lengths to ensure this – more than double the rate in the Netherlands (26%) and well ahead of Germany (29%) and Belgium (43%).

“True progress with AI depends on people,” said Salt. “When teams are trained and supported, technology becomes a tool for empowerment rather than disruption. That’s how the UK can continue to lead responsibly – by putting people at the centre of every innovation.”

Human Oversight and Responsible AI Remain Essential

Despite confidence, professionals still want to see more guardrails in place. Over a quarter (26%) feel there could be more training to help employees use AI effectively, while 37% express concerns around data privacy and oversight. This highlights that while the UK leads in adoption, continued investment in people and responsible use of AI will be key.
