The European Commission urgently needs to equip itself with “new powers” against Shein (French minister)

Paris – Faced with the “risk of spreading illegal content,” the French Minister of Commerce, Véronique Louwagie, believes it is “necessary and urgent to equip the European Commission with new powers to delist platforms that do not comply with the rules,” she wrote in a letter obtained by AFP on Wednesday, confirming information from Figaro.

She also argued, in this letter addressed to Commissioner for Justice Michael McGrath, that “the competent national authorities” should be able to implement “access restriction measures” to these platforms in case of violations.

Thus, delisted companies would be removed from search engine results like Google.

Véronique Louwagie welcomed the European investigations against the platforms Temu and AliExpress, and the scrutiny of the discount fashion giant Shein.

These three giants are accused, some of selling counterfeit and dangerous products, others of false discounts and misleading information. (September 3, 2025)
