Spain moves from second to third place in wine production in the EU in 2025

Brussels.- Spain will register a drop of around 15% in wine production this year, with about 31.5 million hectoliters, and will fall from being the second to the third largest producer in the European Union after Italy and France, according to data published by the Committee of Agricultural Organizations and Community Cooperatives (Copa-Cogeca).
The European wine sector will record a production of about 145.5 million hectoliters in 2025, 1% more than the previous year, a slight recovery in volumes, which remain 7.5% below the average of the last five years.
The difference between the harvests of 2025 and 2018 still exceeds 40 million hectoliters, and the vineyards of Europe “continue to face a combination of challenges that hinder the full recovery of the sector,” the agricultural organizations stated in a statement.
Italy remains the largest producer, with about 47 million hectoliters this year, followed by France, with around 37 million, and Spain falls to third place with approximately 31.5 million hectoliters.
The three countries, which together represent four-fifths of the total volume, have reduced their joint production by 1.5% compared to the 2024 harvest.
Among the main producers, Spain, Germany, and Portugal experienced declines, with production down by 15%, 8%, and 11%, respectively, compared to last year.
In contrast, Italy expects an increase of 8%, and France also records a modest increase of around 2.3%, although its production remains 12% below the average.

Adverse weather conditions, such as high temperatures, along with frequent heatwaves, “are putting great pressure on the sector in the Iberian Peninsula, with the hardest effects recorded inland.”
Conditions in spring were positive, but “an extremely dry summer, especially in August, decimated the autumn harvest.”
European agricultural cooperatives specified that “although the volumes are lower than expected, the quality is very high; in fact, there is widespread satisfaction throughout the sector regarding the quality of the wines, demonstrating the resilience of producers in the face of numerous challenges.”
Spain remains in 2025 the member state with the largest area dedicated to viticulture. (October 28)
