Romania aims to become the customs hub of the European Union
Bucharest – Romania emphasizes that the authority must be placed at a strategic point where operational needs, digitalization and the realities of European borders intersect, and the experience gained in managing borders and trade flows recommends it as a mature partner, ready to contribute to building the new European customs architecture.
Romania manages annually millions of tons of goods by road, rail, sea and air, which turns it into an essential operational hub for the EU’s economic security, argues the Romanian Customs Authority (AVR) for AGERPRES. Its trade priorities are aligned with the Union’s strategic logic: strengthening the internal market, increasing the resilience of supply chains, facilitating legitimate, predictable and digitalized trade, as well as combating fraud and the under-declaration of the value of goods.
Romania supports the development of a uniform European customs system that reduces the administrative burden for operators and strengthens the protection of consumers and the EU’s financial interests. The focus is on the digital transformation of customs processes, the interoperability of IT systems, data-based risk analysis and the integration of advanced technologies in the monitoring of trade flows.
AVR representatives emphasize that the EU is at a defining moment, marked by the increase in the volume of global trade, the intensification of e-commerce and the complexity of supply chains. The modernization of the legislative framework, the complete digitalization of operations and the strengthening of the EU’s analytical capacity are essential for safer, more efficient and more competitive trade, and Romania declares itself ready to contribute actively to these transformations.
The European Commission launched on October 16 the call for applications to host this body, which will support the customs authorities of the member states in simplifying procedures, ensuring the collection of duties and taxes and strengthening the protection of the single market. The deadline for submitting applications was November 27, 2025, and nine member states expressed their interest, including Romania. (12.9.2025)
