How did South Africa A beat England Lions?
South Africa A won the first unofficial Test at Arundel Castle Cricket Club Ground by eight wickets to finish with a 1-0 advantage in the two-match series, in a display of an all-round performance. The South Africa A chase was built on control, patience and great partnerships. The visitors were chasing the target of 214 after resuming it from 122/1 on the final day, found the target easy.
They were two sessions off the pace to score the runs in a pressure-free manner. Lesego Senokwane, Jordan Hermann and Zubayr Hamza were the ones who spearheaded the chase. Hermann was the only one with an unbeaten 70 off 122 balls, hitting a six and 12 boundaries. The introduction of his calm approach helped South Africa A to keep the upper hand in the game. He made two important (and key) partnerships that set the tone of the match.
A 106-run stand with Senokwane helped start the game, as Hamza never looked back with an unbeaten 81-run partnership. Senior clubsters Senokwane (54) and Hamza (55 not out) also contributed well with maturity and consistency to the chase. South Africa A had seized control of the game at the beginning of the match. England Lions were all out after scoring only 157 in the first innings. Jason Smith had four wickets and Nqobani Mokoena came to the party in fine style with three wickets.
This early failure proved to be a big advantage to the touring side. It was also a big contribution from the first innings, as Captain Marques Ackerman put on a terrific 173-run knock. His batting was instrumental in South Africa A posting 331 and putting them ahead in the match by a big 174 runs.
