India started the ball with a first-innings victory. Top and middle order put up a big 564 for 8 declared. The innings was constructed around a series of good performances and not one particular brilliant knock. Shubman Gill was in control and on target throughout his 126 off 177, as he led for the first time.
KL Rahul scored a precise 100 and he was successful at the crease as well as rotating the strike with a composed century. Rishabh Pant was at his usual aggressive pace, with 81 runs, raising the scoring rate. Sai Sudharsan also scored a steady 81 and Washington Sundar scored an unbeaten 52 to give India a strong start.
Mohammad Saleem, Afghanistan’s bowler, was the one who had a cracking moment to take 6 wickets for 140 runs. But the absence of consistent support from the other bowlers, however, allowed India to score a huge amount of runs without any pressure.
Afghanistan then faced a disciplined Indian bowling attack and they fought back. They had bowled out for 152, which was far behind them during the early part of the match. With the deficit, they had to follow-on, but it was obvious there was a quality difference throughout the sessions.
India’s Test form was all round impressive in India. The bowlers kept them on the defensive with the batting appearing in depth, allowing long partnerships.
This match will further cement India’s dominance of home conditions, where they can outpace opponents in both the innings, making them hard to trouble in Tests.
