Dutch believe that EU unity must be for global issues

BRUSSELS – This is evident from the Eurobarometer published on Wednesday, in which over a thousand Dutch people were surveyed. Six months earlier, 93 percent of the Dutch who filled out the barometer felt this way.
Also, across the entire EU, 90 percent of the surveyed citizens want the EU member states to form more of a unity. The EU should primarily focus on defense and security, EU values such as democracy and human rights, and energy independence, according to the respondents. 77 percent of the surveyed Europeans believe that the EU should receive more resources to tackle these global issues. Among the Dutch, this is slightly lower at 73 percent.
When asked whether it is necessary for more to be paid by the EU instead of by individual member states, the Dutch responded slightly more affirmatively (79 percent) than the EU average (78 percent). The Dutch also find it more important that the European Parliament plays a larger role (70 percent) compared to the EU average (62 percent).
Additionally, 60 percent of the Dutch have a positive view of the EU compared to 52 percent of the average. 78 percent of the Dutch believe there are advantages to being a member of the EU, slightly more than the average of the barometer (73 percent). The Dutch particularly see the benefit of collaborating with other EU countries, economic growth, and enhancing security through the EU.
For this Eurobarometer, over 26,000 citizens from all EU member states were surveyed between early and late May of this year.
