Costa started a tour in Slovenia through the capitals of the EU

Cerklje na Gorenjskem – The largest Slovenian exporters can be satisfied with the trade agreement concluded in July between the EU and the USA, said Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob after a meeting with the President of the European Council Antonio Costa at Strmol Castle. Costa, who started a three-week tour of EU member states in Slovenia, emphasized that the framework agreement with the USA should be viewed in a broader context, particularly regarding the Russian aggression against Ukraine.

“Our largest exporters can be somewhat satisfied with what has been achieved, as their competitive position is not significantly deteriorating. They might even gain some opportunities,” Golob said about the implications of the trade agreement between the EU and the USA for the Slovenian economy.

The agreement, which limits tariffs on imports of the vast majority of goods from the EU to the USA to 15 percent, also includes two of the most sensitive sectors relevant to Slovenian exports to the USA, he explained. These are the automotive and pharmaceutical industries.

“The European Union has managed to negotiate tariffs that are among the best, if not the best, of all countries that have been exposed to tariffs from the United States so far,” Golob assessed the agreement between Brussels and Washington.

Costa, meanwhile, emphasized that the agreement should be placed in the broader context of relations with the USA, particularly their support for Ukraine in the Russian aggression.

At the beginning of his tour of the capitals of member states, which he embarked on in preparation for the upcoming European Council meetings, he also highlighted Slovenia’s important role on the international stage. Among other things, he stated that Slovenia is taking a leading role in efforts to protect people and end the war in Gaza.

The Slovenian Prime Minister announced that Slovenia, together with a few like-minded countries, will take some concrete steps in the coming weeks to pressure the Israeli government to stop the massacre in Gaza. (September 2)
