Belgian Prime Minister cautiously optimistic about EU-US trade agreement

De Wever reacted in a message on X that he is relieved, but that there is no reason to celebrate. He continues to warn about the increased trade tariffs and a number of loose ends that are still unclear in the agreement.

“I sincerely hope that the United States will distance itself from the illusion of protectionism and once again embrace the value of free trade, a cornerstone of shared prosperity,” said the Prime Minister.

De Wever also indicates that the European market must be strengthened internally to diversify the global trade network. “Let Europe become the beacon of open, fair, and reliable trade that the world so urgently needs,” concludes De Wever.

Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot adds that the agreement ends a period of uncertainty, but that it is “not an agreement that we can cheer for.”

“We recognize the need for stability and the importance of restoring the transatlantic dialogue, but at the same time, we are aware of the pressure this will put on our industry, particularly in Belgium,” said Prévot. He assures that the government stands by the companies.
