A group of MEPs announced a review of the agreement with Mercosur, did not rule out steps in the CJEU

A group of MEPs announced on Wednesday a thorough review of the agreement with Mercosur. We will explore all possible avenues, including legal ones, in the EU Court of Justice, to ensure the agreement’s compliance with EU treaties – announced 26 deputies, among them Krzysztof Hetman, Michał Kobosko, and Marta Wcisło.

The European Commission adopted the trade agreement with Mercosur on Wednesday. It also proposed a provisional agreement that will come into effect after being approved by the European Parliament and member states. In response to concerns about the agricultural sector, the EC announced a safety brake in case of product surpluses and the possibility of compensation.

26 MEPs in the EP reacted to the EC’s decision, who last year established a group on Mercosur to examine the agreement and its consequences for EU citizens.

-We acknowledge the Commission’s presentation, we will carefully analyze the final text presented today, and we will explore all possible avenues, including legal ones, such as the EU Court of Justice, to ensure its compliance with EU treaties – emphasized the MEPs in a statement sent to the press.

-In times when transparency, legal certainty, and the protection of the founding principles of the Union are more needed than ever, we believe it is necessary to conduct a thorough review of this agreement – they added.

Three Polish MEPs signed the statement: Krzysztof Hetman (PSL), Michał Kobosko (Polska 2050), and Marta Wcisło (KO).

Poles Hetman and Wcisło are also the only signatories of the statement belonging to the center-right European People’s Party, the largest group in the EP, from which the President of the EC Ursula von der Leyen originates.

Among the signatories were also MEPs from the liberal Renew group, social democrats from S&D, the Left, and the Greens. (03.09.2025)
