Why Is Pakistan Wearing Pink Jerseys?
To highlight their support on the occasion, the Pakistan men’s cricket team will wear specially designed pink-themed jerseys in the first T20I against South Africa on October 28 in Rawalpindi. This is a campaign by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to create awareness on breast cancer on the global breast cancer awareness day, known as the #PINKtober.
In the campaign, Pakistan will also not only wear pink jerseys, but also the South African players and match officials will also put on pink ribbons as a sign of solidarity.
The support staff, commentators and other officials will also get involved in putting on pink and the event will be a concerted effort to make breast cancer issues a priority in early detection and regular screening. Pink branding will also be done on the stumps and awareness messages will be displayed on digital screens at the stadium during the match.
Sumair Ahmed Syed, the PCB CEO, stressed that the board implements social causes on the cricket platform. We want to raise the awareness of the significance of early detection and regular screening of breast cancer because this can save millions of lives, said he through the Pink Ribbon campaign.
The event is the first PCB-structured international match to have a Pink Day theme, though similar campaigns have been seen in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) in earlier years.
Fans present at the match and watching via the broadcasting media are also encouraged to participate in the campaign, which promotes breast cancer awareness further. Using cricket’s popularity and visibility, the PCB hopes to reach millions of people and make a difference.
This was the first international match in history to be sponsored by a pink color in the name of social accountability, proving that Pakistani cricket is socially responsible and giving an example to other sporting tournaments in the region.
The question is whether this initiative can encourage more teams and leagues around the world to use sport as a social cause. If it is achieved successfully, the pink-themed T20I held in Pakistan can serve as an example of a sports advocacy campaign worldwide.
