The last five winners of the Epsom Oaks

The Epsom Oaks, the third of Britain’s five prestigious Classics, is a showcase of the best fillies tested over a mile and a half of one of the most challenging tracks in the world. Taking place on day one of the esteemed Derby Festival, it’s an important fixture for those who bet on horse racing.
With a deep field of runners to watch every year, the Oaks is never short of drama, surprises and highlights from superstars. As we count down the days to the 2025 renewal, let’s take a look at the last five fillies to be crowned champion.
2024 – Ezeliya
In 2024, legendary Irish trainer Dermot Weld claimed his second Oaks success with the wonderfully bred Ezeliya. The daughter of Dubawi’s win came over four decades after the veteran handler’s maiden victory in the Classic with Blue Wind in 1981.
Ezeliya went clear with Godolphin’s Dance Sequence with around two furlongs to go, but started to leave her main rival in her wake inside the final furlong and went on to win by a comfortable three lengths from the Charlie Appleby-trained filly.
2023 – Soul Sister
The 2023 renewal of the Oaks marked a first Classic success for the father-son training partnership of John and Thady Gosden, while it was a seventh win in the race for iconic jockey Frankie Dettori—who was enjoying his retirement tour.
Soul Sister was a disappointing last of 12 runners in the Fred Darling on reappearance as she didn’t like the soft ground, but bounced back to win the Musidora next time out before proving no match for the odds-on favourite Savethelastdance in the Oaks.
2022 – Tuesday
It wouldn’t be an article about recent winners of one of the prestigious Classics without Ballydoyle maestro Aidan O’Brien featuring, and the Irish trainer’s landmark 10th victory in the Oaks came via Tuesday in 2022.
The daughter of Galileo shed her maiden tag at Naas in March, but was well-held in the British and Irish versions of the 1000 Guineas when third and second, respectively. She certainly appreciated the step up in trip for the Oaks, though, beating Emily Upjohn by the narrowest of margins.
2021 – Snowfall
Another O’Brien-trained filly, Snowfall delivered one of the most devastating performances in Oaks history in 2021 when she obliterated the strong field of 14 runners to win by a record-breaking 16 lengths under Frankie Dettori.
Ridden comfortably by the great Italian, Tuesday sliced through the field and bumped her way into the lead before the two-furlong marker, before taking off like a jet plane up the stretch for the wide-margin triumph.
2020 – Love
The third of O’Brien’s winners over the last half-decade, Love is, somewhat surprisingly, the last horse to justify favouritism in the Oaks—scoring by an impressive nine lengths at Epsom Downs from short odds of 11/10.
Another daughter of Galileo, Love won the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket by over four lengths, which made it a shock that she wasn’t odds-on for the Oaks. The bookies were made to pay for their generous odds, as Love was once again miles better than her competition.
