The EU will launch its automated border control in October

Brussels (Belgium) – This new system will record in a common file the names, passport numbers, fingerprints, and photos of all third-country nationals traveling to Europe for a short stay.
“This will help us know who is entering and exiting the EU,” said the European Commissioner for Migration, Magnus Brunner.
The implementation of this system, which has been under discussion for nearly ten years, will be phased in over time.
The “entry/exit” system is met with reluctance from some transport companies who fear it will lengthen queues at airports or train stations.
The European executive assures that information campaigns will help smooth the launch of this system. And emphasizes that it will “prevent irregular migration and protect the security of European citizens.”
Twenty-nine countries will participate in this automated control: all EU countries except Cyprus and Ireland. But also Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. (July 30, 2025)
