The EU suspends its retaliatory measures after the trade agreement reached with Trump

In recent months, the Commission had prepared a list of American products that would be taxed if the United States and the EU did not reach an agreement.

This list included 93 billion euros worth of goods: soybeans, airplanes, cars, etc.

After months of very tough negotiations, Brussels and Washington sealed a trade agreement at the end of July based on a 15% tariff on European products arriving in the United States.

“The Commission has today adopted the necessary legal procedure to suspend the implementation of our European countermeasures,” said a spokesperson for the European executive, Olof Gill, on Tuesday.

However, the European Union has not ruled out reactivating these retaliatory measures if the trade standoff with the Trump administration were to take new turns.

“We are putting (these measures) on ice but we can always bring them back,” explained a European official on condition of anonymity.
