The EU orders X to retain data on Grok until the end of 2026
Brussels (ANSA) – The European Commission has ordered the social network X to preserve “all internal documents and data” related to the integrated artificial intelligence chatbot Grok “until the end of 2026”, said the spokesperson of the EU executive Thomas Regnier in the daily briefing with the press.
“We have seen Grok generate antisemitic content and, more recently, sexual images of children. This is illegal. This is unacceptable,” he said. “We take this very seriously.” The data preservation order, he explained, “is, in fact, an extension” of a previous measure already sent to X “last year” and also related to “algorithms and recommendation systems” on the dissemination of illegal content.
“It is a continuation of the measures we have already taken,” he added, specifying that the Commission is “currently analyzing” the information received from the platform. According to the Commission, “the DSA is very clear: in Europe all platforms must put their own house in order, because what is being generated here is unacceptable” and “compliance with EU law is not an option. It is an obligation.”
Asked about the possibility of suspending Grok as an interim measure, the spokesperson replied that this would be “a measure of very last resort” provided for by the DSA, but clarified: “We are not here to suspend platforms” and “our goal is to force every platform to put its own house in order” (8 January).
