The EU accuses Temu, ‘illegal products on the platform’

Brussels (ANSA) – The European Commission has preliminarily established that Temu has violated the obligation set out in the Digital Services Act (DSA) to adequately assess the risk of selling illegal products on its marketplace. The EU investigation – also conducted with anonymous purchases – found the presence of numerous non-compliant items, including toys and electronic devices.
The risk assessment conducted by the Chinese e-commerce giant in 2024 was found to be generic and with mitigation measures deemed ineffective. If confirmed, the violations could lead to fines of up to 6% of annual revenue.
“We shop online because we trust that the products sold in our Single Market are safe and compliant with our standards. In our preliminary view, Temu is far from assessing the risks for its users according to the standards required by the Digital Services Act,” said the Vice President of the Commission Henna Virkkunen. “The safety of online consumers – she added – is non-negotiable” (July 28).
