Slovenia welcomes the preservation of key agricultural policy measures in the upcoming EU budget

Brussels – The State Secretary at the Slovenian Ministry of Agriculture Maša Žagar welcomed the preservation of the existing implementation model and key measures of the Common Agricultural Policy in the first discussion on the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy within the framework of the long-term budget of the union (MFF) 2028-34, noting that the proposal does not meet all the key needs of Slovenian farmers.

Agriculture ministers from the member states discussed a package of proposals for the future Common Agricultural Policy of the EU within the MFF 2028-34. The European Commission’s proposal for support to agricultural holdings anticipates just under 294 billion euros out of a total of nearly 2000 billion euros.

According to the breakdown published last week, Slovenia is allocated 1.34 billion euros, while member states will also be able to allocate part of the remaining funds for support to farmers and other agriculture-related measures within the so-called national-regional plans.

The State Secretary at the Slovenian Ministry of Agriculture, Žagar, welcomed the preservation of the existing implementation model and key measures of the Common Agricultural Policy.

At the same time, she emphasized that the Commission’s proposal does not meet all the key needs of Slovenian farmers, particularly regarding the financing of the Common Agricultural Policy, investments in infrastructure, and the supportive environment of the knowledge and innovation system in agriculture.

Therefore, Slovenia will insist on greater flexibility and appropriate support for these measures during negotiations, as emphasized by the Ministry of Agriculture. (September 23)
