Slovenia in 2021 with the smallest amounts of food waste per capita in the EU

Luxembourg/Ljubljana – Slovenia has discarded the least food per capita among EU member states, with the latest data from the European statistical office Eurostat showing 78 kilograms. In 2023, municipal companies in the union collected a total of 58.2 million tons of food waste, averaging 130 kilograms per capita.
There were significant differences among EU countries. At the top was Cyprus with 286 kilograms, followed by Denmark with 261 kilograms, where the local economically significant food processing industry stood out, and Greece was in third place with 201 kilograms.
At the bottom of the ranking was Slovenia with 78 kilograms, of which 34 kilograms were attributed to households and 26 kilograms to food service providers. The figures in other sectors were very low. Just above Slovenia was Hungary (88 kilograms), while Slovakia (97 kilograms) and the Czech Republic (98 kilograms) collected less than 100 kilograms of food waste per capita.
However, Slovenian statisticians also published data for 2024 at the end of September. In Slovenia, we discarded an average of 79 kilograms per capita. (October 16)
