Slovenia collects proposals regarding the protection of the domestic steel industry

Brussels/Ljubljana – Slovenia, within the framework of a public consultation on the future regulation of the protection of the European steel sector, which was initiated by the European Commission in July, is gathering opinions from domestic representatives in the steel industry. Recently, France has added its unofficial proposal, which has gained the support of ten member states of the union, among which Slovenia is not included.

With the public consultation on the future regulation of the protection of the European steel sector, which has been severely affected by American tariffs, the European Commission aims to create a balanced regulation to protect against unfair competition from third countries, according to the Slovenian Ministry of Economy, Tourism, and Sport. This regulation is expected to take into account the interests of both European steel product manufacturers and those who use steel products in further production or import them from third countries. At the end of July, France, along with ten other EU member states, announced its initiative for the adoption of new measures to protect the European steel industry.

According to the ministry, Slovenia could not define its position on France’s specific proposals due to a lack of information about the interest of the domestic steel industry and other related sectors. They emphasized that they are currently focused on preparing for the anticipated submission of a new legislative proposal from the European Commission in this area. “Based on the received responses, we will strive to formulate positions that are balanced with the interests of the steel sector and the user industry,” they added.

Slovenian companies exported nearly 91.3 million euros worth of steel products and 32.5 million euros worth of aluminum and aluminum products to the USA last year, according to preliminary data from the national statistical office. (August 1)
