Sidra Amin Fined For Equipment Abuse by ICC

The ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup match between India and Pakistan took a rather illogical turn off the field when the top-order batter of Pakistan, Sidra Amin, was reprimanded for violating the ICC Code of Conduct. It happened in the 40th over when Sneh Rana dismissed Amin and as he was furious, he threw his bat on the ground and as a result, Amin was caught by Harmanpreet Kaur.

The governing body found that Amin contravened Article 2.2 that concerned the abuse of the cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment, or fixtures and fittings during an International Match. Although the act did not directly affect the outcome of the match it resulted in a disciplinary measure which was one demerit point on her record.

It is her first offence during the two-year period of which the 33-year-old pleaded guilty to the punishment offered by the referee Shandre Fritz at the ICC matches, avoiding any formal proceedings. Umpires, Lauren Agenbag, Nimali Perera, Kerrin Klaaste, and Kim Cotton, charged him.

Amin was rebuked, but was the best performer in the contest of Pakistan. Her strong 81 off 106 which included nine fours and a six maintained Pakistan in the fight as they went after a challenging 248. But her sacking caused her to crumble and Pakistan was defeated by 159 runs to give India a 88 run win.

Breaches at level 1 such as Amin did are minor but still they reiterate the issue of discipline on international arena. To Pakistan, the event highlights the emotional cost of stressful matches with arch-rivals India.

The disappointment notwithstanding, her innings highlighted the worth of Amin to the batting order of Pakistan. In future, this will not only be the challenge of being consistent with the bat, but also holding composure under pressure which as I believe is the main lesson the ICC would like to promote.
