Shan Masood Scripts Historic Double Century
On Sunday, Pakistan Test captain Shan Masood made an inscription in the cricketing history of the country, after he became the first Pakistani batter to record the fastest first-class double century, and gave a masterful show in the President Trophy Grade-I 2025-26.
Masood made the landmark with 177 balls only in the case of Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) vs. Sahir Associates at the National Bank Sports Complex, overtaking the national record of many years, held by Inzamam-ul-Haq. Back in 1992 Inzamam had made his two hundred on 188 deliveries in a tour match against Oxford and Cambridge University.
This feat of Masood is even more important because it has already become the quickest first-class double-century ever to be made on Pakistani soil, surpassing the previous record of 182 balls, set in 2006 by Virender Sehwag, of India.
SNGPL had a strong start and scored 53 and 53 respectively by Azan Awais and Ali Zaryab who became the first batsmen to face the opposition. Azan was sent home after 26 but the innings actually caught pace as Masood entered with Zaryab in the field. The two weaved a record-breaking alliance together, and they ruthlessly assaulted the Sahir Associates bowling attack and dominated the first day.
Ali Zaryab also came close to his 200, only hitting 192 out of 237 balls, with 27 fours and four sixes in between, before he was dismissed by Mohammad Hasnain. Masood however, was not beaten on 212 out of 185 deliveries with 18 fours and two sixes.
SNGPL had soared to an impressive 460-2 in 82.1 overs incidentally by the stumps on the first day that they dominated the competition, and to a very large extent fixed the agenda on the rest of the tournament.
