Sarajevo joins European cities in tackling air pollution

Sarajevo, (Fena) – Sarajevo is joining the European project ATMOPOLIS, funded by the EU, which aims to develop socially oriented solutions to reduce air and noise pollution in urban areas. The initial consortium meeting is being held on January 21 in Brussels, and among the 14 partners from nine countries is the Institute of Public Health of Sarajevo Canton.

The project will monitor the impact of pollution on health, especially concentrations of PM2.5, NO₂ and ozone, as well as the consequences of noise, which the EU links to thousands of premature deaths annually. ATMOPOLIS differs from previous approaches because it connects experts and citizens through community data collection, personal narratives and visual methods such as “photovoice”.

With a budget of five million euros, the project within the Horizon Europe program “Zero-Pollution Cities” will develop integrated models for testing mitigation measures and support cities, including Sarajevo, in creating more effective policies. Citizens will have a key role in identifying problems, changing behavior and shaping solutions. (22.01.)
