Romania receives over 586 million euros from the European Commission for transport investments

Bucharest – The European Commission has transferred to Romania over 586 million euros from the Cohesion Fund and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) under the 2021-2027 Transport Programme, Minister of Finance Alexandru Nazare announced on his Facebook page on Tuesday.

According to the minister’s post, the payment is linked to major infrastructure investments, including the Ploieşti-Buzău-Focşani motorway, which were initially included in the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). However, between September and December this year, in consultation with the European Commission, the government transferred these projects to the 2021-2027 Transport Programme, allowing for a more efficient use of EU funds.

Nazare stressed that the transferred funds are EU grants, not Romanian taxpayers’ money, and will be directed straight into the Romanian economy, mainly to finance the development of transport infrastructure, regional investments and public services.

The minister also announced that on Sunday the Ministry of Finance transferred a total of 714 million lei to several local authorities to cover their share of local investments financed from non-reimbursable grants related to the PNRR. (30.12.2025)
