Peace must preserve the “sovereignty” and “territorial integrity” of Ukraine (von der Leyen)
Brussels – “We welcome all efforts that lead to our common goal: a just and lasting peace that preserves Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” said Ursula von der Leyen on the X network, commenting on a telephone conversation with European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
This conversation took place before the meeting between Mr. Zelensky and U.S. President Donald Trump scheduled for Sunday.
“And this strengthens the country’s security and its defense capabilities, as an integral part of the security of our continent,” added the European leader.
“In 2026, the Commission will continue to maintain pressure on the Kremlin, to support Ukraine and to work intensively to accompany Ukraine on the path to EU membership,” she further stated.
The President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, who took part in the exchange with Mr. Zelensky, echoed these remarks. “The EU’s support for Ukraine will not weaken,” he wrote on X. “In war, in peace, in reconstruction,” he added. (27 December 2025)
