PCB contract reform reshape player system?

One of the most structural changes in the Pakistan Cricket Board’s modern cricket administration history is underway with the PCB rolling out the PCB contract reform which reshaped the player system in Pakistan. The board officially has changed its grading system of A, B, C, and D to a grading system that is based on format.

The reform of the PCB system is a transition from the traditional system of players to the modern one of specialization and workload efficiency. The new system means that players will not be divided into general categories. Rather, they will go into the specific performance tracks that have been determined by format strength and the clarity of roles.

Track AB is the most significant in this system as it is meant for the players who can play both ODI and Test cricket. This is the group of highest commitment and responsibility in the new structure.

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi and senior officials said this is an overhaul to make Pakistan cricket more in line with the modern cricket of the international standards. Emphasis is now on adaptability to performances instead of legacy grading.

A major change in the new model was that Track AB players could now take part in the T20 Internationals from time to time without impact on their classification. This means that player status does not change due to tactical decisions that involve the shorter form. These will be considered situational changes only and not structural changes.

The move of players under the PCB contract reform process should also lead to greater workload management. Players will now have more defined expectations of their role which could help to minimise confusion in selection policies.
