Kosovo: the EU is “counting on the rapid formation” of a government to break the deadlock

Brussels – The new government of Kosovo “will have to redouble its efforts to carry out essential reforms related to the EU,” Kaja Kallas said in a statement about this country, which is a candidate for accession to the bloc.

The youngest country in Europe, independent since 2008, has been mired in crisis since the parliamentary elections of February 2025. Coming in first, the party of outgoing Prime Minister Albin Kurti failed to obtain a majority and found no ally to govern with him, forcing Kosovars to return to the polls.

Mr. Kurti’s party won the parliamentary elections on Sunday, with preliminary official results suggesting that it is approaching 50% of the vote, which could put an end to the political deadlock.

The Central Election Commission announced that this political party, Vetëvendosje (VV), was credited with 49.79% of the votes, after the counting of ballots in about 95% of polling stations.

“We must act as quickly as possible to set up the institutions,” Mr. Kurti declared, calling on the opposition to cooperate with his party in parliament. (29 December 2025)
