Joe Root Matches Rahul Dravid’s Test Record

On Monday, England veteran Joe Root added another feather to his cap by matching India’s Rahul Dravid’s record for most catches as a fielder in Tests. The 34-year-old reached the milestone on the second-to-last day of the first Test between England and India. He took Shardul Thakur off Josh Tongue.
His quick catch at first slip brought him up to Dravid’s level. Since 2012, Dravid has been the fielder with the most catches in the format, with 210. Root’s Test catches total was 210 after 154 matches, which is 10 fewer than Dravid’s.
Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardene ranks third with 205 catches in 149 matches. Australia’s Steve Smith and South Africa’s Jacques Kallis are tied for fourth with 200 catches each. Younis Khan, who used to be the captain of Pakistan, is the only player from that country in the Top 15. He has 139 catches in 118 matches.
In addition to the catches record mentioned above, Joe Root is also close to breaking other records in the current five-match series against India. The right-handed batsman just reached the 13,000-run mark during England’s historic one-off Test against Zimbabwe. He is now very close to passing two cricketing greats, Ricky Ponting and Rahul Dravid, on the all-time Test run-scorers list.
Root has scored 13,006 runs in 153 matches, with an average of 50.80. He has 36 centuries and 65 half-centuries. To pass India’s Dravid, he needs 282 runs; to pass South Africa’s Kallis, he needs 283 runs; and to pass former Australia captain Ricky Ponting, he needs 373 runs. India’s Sachin Tendulkar leads the list of batters with the most Test runs with 15921 runs.
