Is Pakistan ODI squad selection shifting strategy?

The Pakistan ODI team selection is changing its hues and Pakistani bowlers are showing the signs of this change as they are getting ready for the three match series against Australia from May 30.

On the other hand, selectors are turning to new pace options. The emerging bowlers Hunain Shah and Ali Raza are being closely watched. This is a move towards creating new fast bowling resources for the future. Meanwhile, Haris Rauf is likely to stay on and give some experience to the attack.

But, Mohammad Wasim Jr will miss out most probably. This is an indication that pace unit is being shifted in order to avoid using a combination with which they had already familiar. Captain Shaheen Shah Afridi will continue to lead, as he has always done, and will keep the team steady as they go through this transition period.

Changes don’t happen just on the bowling side. All-rounders Faheem Ashraf and Hussain Talat will also miss out. This is indicative of a more explicit team organisation and role definition. Injuries have also inflicted on Pakistan. Saim Ayub and Fakhar Zaman, who are both ruled out, remain under PCB rehabilitation. Without them, the top order is also affected and the team must re-evaluate their approach to batting.

As a wicketkeeper, there are doubts over Mohammad Rizwan. Head coach Mike Hesson is reportedly not keen to have him as part of the ODI squad. This move may be an attempt to revamp the white-ball image of Pakistan.

Preparations are going into the final phase as the training camp is about to start in Islamabad. As a whole, the selection takes the long view. Pakistan has already started to shape a younger and more dynamic ODI team for future world cup tournaments.
