Immigration: Bruxelles wants the European Parliament to “move forward”, including with the far right
Brussels – “We must move forward in order to give citizens the feeling that we are in control of the migratory situation,” said European Commissioner in charge of immigration Magnus Brunner on Thursday.
And it is up to Parliament to decide how to move forward on this issue “whatever” majorities are formed, he added at a press conference.
Ursula von der Leyen, renewed at the head of the Commission thanks to an alliance between the right, the center and the social democrats, put a series of proposals on the table this year to tighten the screws on immigration. Among other things, they allow migrants to be sent back to countries they are not from, but that Europe considers safe.
These proposals do not appeal to the left wing of Parliament, which fears for human rights.
They received an initial green light in a parliamentary committee on Wednesday thanks to an alliance between the right and the far right. Magnus Brunner spoke of a “positive result” and called on MEPs and member states to “speed up” on this issue. (4 December 2025)
