ICC Finds Suryakumar Guilty in Asia Cup Code of Conduct Row

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has convicted India captain Suryakumar Yadav of violating the ICC code of conduct following his comments after India’s Asia Cup group stage victory over Pakistan on September 14.
Yadav denied being guilty but was turned down on appeal by ICC match referee Richie Richardson at a hearing in Dubai on Friday, ESPNcricinfo reports. Although the ICC has not specified the punishment, the verdict was passed after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) submitted an official complaint on the grounds that Yadav had made political remarks, which contravened the principle of neutrality in ICC.
According to sources, the PCB has requested a Level 4 sanction, the toughest sanction imposed by the ICC, claiming that Yadav’s remarks weakened the spirit of cricket and damaged the sport’s reputation.
The ICC did not go far enough to declare such a harsh punishment, but Richardson allegedly informed the Indian captain that he would not say politically charged words in the future. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) appealed the ruling, further fueling the tussle between the two cricketing boards.
The scandal was caused by the Indian group-stage victory, which attracted enormous publicity in the sport and off-field. Since India and Pakistan have not yet held bilateral series since 2012 because of political tensions, their few encounters in multinational tournaments usually accompany increased stakes.
To make matters worse, the BCCI also filed grievances against Haris Rauf and Sahibzada Farhan over their incendiary on-field revelations during the Super Four match on September 21. Both Pakistani players denied the political motive, provided written answers to the ICC, and avoided harsher punishment.
The ICC decision has added another dose of drama to an already heated rivalry between the arch-rivals as they celebrate the final of the Asia Cup 2025 on Sunday. Fans all over the world are now waiting not only for a cricketing event but also for the next installment of a high-stakes drama that is also a blend of sport, politics, and national pride.
