Gonzato: The EU will continue to support strengthening the independence, accountability, and efficiency of the judiciary in Albania

The European Union Delegation in Tirana will closely follow the process of selecting the new head of the special structure against organized crime and corruption.

The EU Ambassador to Albania, Silvio Gonzato, held a meeting with the Chairwoman of the High Council of the Prosecution, Mirela Bogdani, from which he conveyed the message that the EU delegation will also continue to support the entire judicial system in strengthening independence, accountability, and efficiency at all levels.

The High Council of the Prosecution is one of the new bodies of judicial governance, resulting from the Justice Reform.

“A trustworthy and independent justice system remains essential to strengthen citizens’ trust and to advance Albania’s path towards the European Union,” Gonzato stated.

During the meeting with Bogdani, Gonzato discussed future work and key moments expected, including the selection and appointment of the new head of SPAK.

Gonzato declared that the EU delegation will closely follow this process as well as continue support for the Justice system.

The HCP has a crucial role in ensuring transparent and merit-based procedures for appointments, evaluations, and professional standards within the prosecution system.

“We will continue to assist the HCP with our best expertise to help Albania meet EU standards,” Gonzato expressed.

The Special Prosecution against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK), as an entity resulting from the Justice Reform, has played a role in advancing Albania’s integration agenda by tackling impunity at various levels.

After a week, the HCP will begin the process of selecting the new head of SPAK who will succeed Altin Dumani in office.

Three years ago, Dumani received the majority of votes from the HCP, 5 out of 11 present at the meeting. (September 11)
