France: Against “submission” to Trump, far-right leader Bardella hardens his tone

Paris – Usually very critical of “Ursula von der Leyen’s Europe,” Jordan Bardella is now urging Brussels to adopt a “balance of power” with Washington: the transatlantic crisis is also shifting lines on the far right.

From Strasbourg, the leader of the Patriots in the European Parliament vigorously denounced the United States’ ambitions to annex Greenland, coupled with an ultimatum on customs duties against the countries of the Old Continent that would oppose it, with France at the forefront.

“When an American president openly threatens a European state, when he combines an assumed territorial pressure with explicit commercial blackmail (…) a balance of power is required,” he said.

Faced with this “test of power (and) of truth” initiated by the occupant of the White House, “our submission would be a historic mistake,” insisted Mr. Bardella, calling in particular for the “immediate” suspension of the trade agreement sealed last summer between the EU and the United States.
