Fiber for all in new network proposals from the EU

Strasbourg – Old copper lines are to start being replaced by fiber for everyone in the EU from 2030 onwards, hopes the EU Commission.

The transition is part of the Digital Networks Act (DNA) presented by EU Commissioner Henna Virkkunen at a press conference in Strasbourg.

“Disconnecting from copper is crucial for connecting all households to gigabit networks,” says Virkkunen.

Simpler rules will also make it easier for operators to obtain permits to build networks and satellite services.

In parallel, the Commission has put forward new proposals on cybersecurity to make it easier to identify and force out operators whose networks are seen as security risks. Even though no specific countries are mentioned in the proposals, China has already reacted with anger and accused the EU of protectionism.
