EU suspends countermeasures on American tariffs

BRUSSELS – The European Union will suspend two packages of countermeasures against American tariffs for six months, following an agreement with U.S. President Donald Trump, announced a spokesperson for the European Commission (EC) on Monday.

The agreement between the European Union and the U.S. left many questions unresolved, including tariffs on alcoholic beverages, and Trump’s executive order from last week imposing a 15 percent tariff on imports of most products from the EU does not include an exemption for cars or their parts.

European officials emphasize that they expect additional regulations.

“The EU continues to work with the U.S. to finalize a joint statement as agreed on July 27,” the EC spokesperson stated.

“In light of these objectives, the EC will take the necessary steps to suspend the EU’s countermeasures against the U.S. for six months, which were set to take effect on August 7.”

The European countermeasures consist of two packages – one in response to American tariffs on steel and aluminum, and the other to Trump’s basic tariffs and those on cars. (August 4, 2025.)
