EU ministers united on the need to become more independent

COPENHAGEN – Europe must also cooperate more during this period of tensions in the world. This was stated by European Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis (Economy) after the meeting with the ministers.
“Europe must quickly find its place in a changing world to protect its citizens and secure its long-term prosperity,” Dombrovskis said during a press conference. “Recent violations of NATO airspace, including the outrageous violation of Estonian airspace by Russian MiGs on Friday, underscore the necessity and urgency for Europe to take responsibility for its own security and to increase pressure on the Russian aggressor.”
The ministers discussed the report from the Brussels think tank Bruegel on geopolitical shifts and the economic consequences of these for Europe on Saturday.
The think tank concludes that Europe is poorly prepared for international shifts. Europe must work towards greater independence and more cooperation, especially in defense, technology, finance, and critical raw materials such as rare earth metals, advises Bruegel.
Canada, the UK, and Ukraine were also present at the meeting. “In today’s world, it is more important than ever that we deepen cooperation among like-minded countries,” Dombrovskis said.
This was echoed by Danish Minister Stephanie Lose (Economic Affairs). “Russia is waging war in Europe, and international cooperation and trade are under pressure. We must work closely together in Europe, and we must do so with like-minded partners.”
