Costa: Greenland belongs to its people and has the full support of the EU
The European Union will support Greenland and Denmark when needed and we will not accept violations of international law wherever they occur, said the President of the European Council Antonio Costa today.
Regarding Greenland, allow me to be clear: Greenland belongs to its people. Nothing can be decided for Denmark and for Greenland without Denmark and without Greenland,” Costa said in a speech marking the assumption of the rotating EU presidency by Cyprus.
“They have the full support and solidarity of the European Union,” he said.
The American president has repeatedly stated in recent days that he wants to gain control of Greenland, saying that the island is the key to the US military strategy and claiming that Denmark has not done enough to protect it.
Costa said that Cyprus is taking over the reins of the EU Council at a time when the rules-based international order is under attack and urged EU member states to resist these developments.
“The European Union cannot accept violations of international law, whether in Cyprus, in Latin America, in Greenland, in Ukraine or in Gaza,” Costa said.
“Europe will remain a firm and unwavering defender of international law and multilateralism.” (07/01/26)
