Bumrah Urged to Skip IPL for India Duty

On Sunday, Bharat Arun, who used to be India’s bowling coach, said that great players like Jasprit Bumrah could forgo the Indian Premier League (IPL) if it helps them stay in shape for forthcoming international series.

Arun told Indian media before the Asia Cup that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) needed to send a clear message and that players should be “adequately compensated” for the time they miss in the IPL.

“This would definitely help to rest players during the IPL.” Especially when you want to keep bowlers safe. It’s fine for a hitter or a spinner to play in all formats.

“But for a fast bowler, playing too much cricket doesn’t leave enough time to work on their body. So, yeah, this is something that can be looked at. “Arun said that players like Bumrah or any other bowler who is important to a certain series can be rested and paid fairly.”

Arun said that it would be fair if the BCCI made sure that players are paid fairly and given good advice, as they are under contract.

He said, “From Cricket Australia, where pacers like Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc often skip the IPL to focus on international commitments, something India has not traditionally done.”

Bumrah hurt his back badly in January, but he made a great comeback during the IPL, playing in 12 straight games as the Mumbai Indians reached the second Qualifier.

Because of tensions between India and Pakistan, the season was extended, and the England Test series started just a few weeks after the IPL ended.

Bumrah, along with skipper Shubman Gill and head selector Ajit Agarkar, had already said he would only play in three of the five Tests in England. He would not participate in the last match, even if the series was on the line.

He is now free to play in the T20 format Asia Cup 2025, which starts in September.
