Artificial intelligence now sits between organisations and their audiences, shaping what people see before they reach a website.

This shift is already measurable. A global survey found that 88% of organisations report using AI in at least one business function, though many remain early in scaling it beyond pilot stages.

Search behaviour is changing with this adoption. AI-generated summaries and conversational tools increasingly provide direct answers, reducing the need to click through to source sites. 

Studies of Google AI Overviews show that organic click-through rates can fall by up to 61% for queries with AI summaries compared to traditional search results. In addition, research shows that when users encounter an AI summary, they click traditional search result links in only about 8% of visits, compared with 15% when no summary appears.

Research and marketing frameworks such as Accuracast’s AI Marketing Playbook show that as AI increasingly mediates search and discovery, organisations must focus less on rankings and more on how clearly and consistently they can be interpreted and trusted by automated systems.

The region also produces a substantial talent pipeline, with over 43,000 graduates annually, supporting innovation and helping businesses scale in the digital economy.

In addition, Leeds’ digital and tech sector is growing around 125% faster than the national average, with a 46% increase in tech roles in recent years, signalling strong momentum in regional AI, cloud and data capabilities.

This emphasises that AI and tech are not abstract topics for the region’s business community. They are core components of Yorkshire’s economic infrastructure.

 

AI Has Become the Interface, Not the Tool

AI now mediates how information is accessed, interpreted, and acted on.

Users are no longer navigating interfaces designed solely by organisations. Instead, they increasingly interact with AI systems that summarise sources, rank relevance, and present direct answers. This is no longer experimental. 

OpenAI confirms that ChatGPT is used globally across consumer and enterprise contexts, while Google has integrated AI-generated summaries directly into its core search experience through AI Overviews, changing how information is consumed at scale.

As a result, discovery increasingly happens inside AI systems rather than on owned platforms. Websites are still indexed, but they are no longer the primary destination. They function as source material. AI tools extract, compress, and reframe information before a human sees it.

This shift changes control. Organisations do not decide how their content is summarised, which facts are emphasised, or which competitors appear alongside them. Those decisions are made upstream, inside systems designed to prioritise clarity and confidence rather than brand intent.

When AI becomes the interface, visibility depends less on being clicked and more on being selected. That selection process is automated and continuous. It operates whether organisations are prepared for it or not.

This is why visibility can no longer be treated as a channel-level concern. It sits alongside risk, compliance, and accountability. AI systems increasingly shape how organisations are perceived, yet few companies have defined who owns that representation or how errors are identified and corrected.

Without governance, businesses risk losing influence silently. Not because their offerings are weaker, but because machines cannot interpret them reliably.

This is not a tooling issue. It is an operating model issue. Without clear boundaries, review processes, and accountability, AI shifts work rather than removing it, while increasing legal, reputational, and operational exposure.

They are interpreted, summarised, and recommended by machines that prioritise clarity, trust signals, and consistency. When those signals are weak or unmanaged, visibility and influence decline quietly.

The evidence is already clear. Search behaviour is changing. Decision-making is being mediated. Responsibility is shifting to the organisations deploying AI, not the vendors building it. Productivity gains exist, but only where controls, training, and ownership are clearly defined.
