A. Danko criticizes the EU for requiring that cars with combustion engines must be modified after 2035
Bratislava/Brussels – Cars with combustion engines will stop being produced in the EU after 2035, and those versions that go on sale will have to be specially modified. So it is not true that the ban on combustion engines has been lifted. This was stated on Thursday by the Deputy Speaker of Parliament and head of the Slovak National Party (SNS) Andrej Danko in response to the package of measures for the automotive industry presented by the European Commission (EC) on 16 December. Danko called the Commission “false”, TASR reports.
“When I looked at that decision of the European Commission, I found out that despite everything, 90 percent of cars will stop being produced. They may tell us that the ban on combustion engines has been lifted, but that ban still applies, because the remaining 10 percent of cars that will be produced, which even carmakers are protesting against, must have special modifications,” specified Andrej Danko.
The Brussels correspondent of TASR reported that on Tuesday (16 December) the EC presented a package of measures for the automotive industry to support this sector’s efforts in the transition to clean mobility. From 2035, car manufacturers will have to meet the target of a 90% reduction in emissions. The remaining 10% of emissions will be offset by the use of low-carbon steel produced in the Union or electronic fuels and biofuels. This will allow, in addition to electric cars and hydrogen vehicles, plug-in hybrids, range-extended vehicles, mild hybrids and cars with combustion engines to continue to be driven even after 2035.
The SNS chairman also reacted to the vote of MEPs on the ban on imports of Russian gas. “Our ancestors built gas pipelines to import gas from the East, after all, that was our advantage. The advantage of the pipeline, of cheap gas, is here and only a fool cannot see that they want to tie us to taking gas from the Nordic countries, from the Arabs and from states where Western countries do business,” he said.
According to him, Western petrochemical companies operate in the aforementioned locations and it is natural that they are bothered by local players such as Slovnaft or MOL. “Big companies are pursuing their own interests. All this is leading to them turning us into a colony of fools,” he stressed. However, he said, there will always be people in the state who will flatter them, who will stir up tension and conflicts.
