Yes to reduced wolf protection in the EU

Strasbourg – The EU Parliament approves that the wolf in Europe should be classified as “protected” instead of “strictly protected”.

The change follows the EU Commission’s agreement last autumn with EU member states and the Council of Europe on the downgrade, as the wolf population in Europe has grown in recent years.

The new classification will take effect once the EU Council of Ministers has made the same formal decision, which is expected soon.

In the EU Parliament, 371 members voted in favor of the reclassification against 162 opposed and 37 abstentions. The change means it will be easier for countries to carry out hunting and other measures.

In Sweden, the government wants to reduce the Swedish minimum level for wolves from 300 to 170 animals.
