With the European regulation, political advertising is now more transparent

Ljubljana – Slovenia has fully begun to implement the regulation of the European Parliament and Council on transparency and targeting in political advertising. This is a step towards greater transparency in political campaigns, as every political advertisement must be explicitly labeled as such and must also contain information about the client and the price of the advertisement.
The regulation brings common rules for all member states of the European Union and aims to limit covert political advertising, misuse of personal data, and influences from third countries. From now on, every political advertisement must be clearly labeled as political and must also include information about the client or sponsor, the amount spent, and any use of targeting. Citizens will thus be able to more easily recognize who is behind a particular message and who it is intended for.
Slovenia is facing both regular parliamentary and local elections in the coming year. The former will be in the spring, while the latter will be in the autumn, but the pre-election campaign is already being felt in the political space. The supervisory authority for monitoring the use of the regulation regarding targeting and displaying advertisements in online political advertising is the Information Commissioner. The Agency for Communication Networks and Services of the Republic of Slovenia will also have a supervisory role, primarily in the area of digital services, and it is expected that the Inspectorate for Culture and Media and the Inspectorate for Internal Affairs will also be involved.
