Violence against intersex people on the rise in the EU

Vienna – One in three intersex individuals has been “physically or sexually assaulted” in the five years preceding the survey, indicates the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) in the statement accompanying its report mentioning “an extremely marginalized group.”

1,920 intersex individuals (born with innate variations in sexual characteristics (…) that do not fit the typical definition of female or male) were surveyed online in 30 EU countries and the Western Balkans in 2023.

The FRA notes a “significant increase (in violence) compared to 2019” and “a rate three times higher” than that of the overall LGBT+ population.

More than two out of three respondents (69%) state that the main reason for this increase lies in “the negative attitude and discourse held by politicians.”

According to the report, more than one in two individuals from this “vulnerable minority” has undergone surgery or another medical treatment to alter their sexual characteristics “without their informed consent.” (September 17, 2025)
