US press Dan Jørgensen to close Russian gas as soon as possible

The USA is pressuring Europe to “close off” Russian gas as soon as possible. This is stated by EU Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan Jørgensen after a meeting with the US Secretary of Energy, Chris Wright.

The USA is instead ready to supply Europe with the necessary gas. This has been emphasized by the American Secretary of Energy during the meeting according to Dan Jørgensen.

However, the Danish commissioner does not intend to change the timeline in the EU Commission’s proposal, which aims for a stop to Russian gas by 2028.

– It is already a very ambitious timeline, says Dan Jørgensen.

He emphasizes that the EU Commission aims to stop all short-term contracts by the end of the year.

– This means that a third of the Russian gas we import will soon stop.

– Of course, it takes longer to exit long-term contracts. And we need to ensure that EU countries have alternatives, says Dan Jørgensen.

The EU Commission’s plan for a quick farewell to Russian gas has faced resistance from countries like Hungary, Slovakia, and Austria, which point out that they do not have ports and thus find it harder to import gas from elsewhere.

However, Dan Jørgensen believes that it will be possible to get the proposal passed because it can happen with a qualified majority.

If that happens, the USA is ready to sell the necessary gas to Europe. This was stated by the American Secretary of Energy to Dan Jørgensen.

– The USA is expanding their production to be able to increase their exports, says Dan Jørgensen.

However, it is not the EU Commission or Dan Jørgensen himself who is responsible for energy purchases. It is up to the individual countries.

The EU Commission has promised EU countries to work to ensure that they have security for their energy supply despite saying goodbye to Russian gas.

– What we can do is facilitate and ensure that if there are any challenges regarding legislation, we will solve it, says Dan Jørgensen.
