Tusk: Europe cannot afford to be weak, either towards its enemies or towards its allies
Europe cannot afford to be weak – neither towards enemies nor towards allies; concessions bring no results, only humiliation, Prime Minister Donald Tusk assessed on Tuesday.
“Concessions are always a sign of weakness. Europe cannot afford to be weak – neither towards enemies nor towards allies. Concessions bring no results, only humiliation. European assertiveness and self-confidence have become the need of the moment,” we read in a post on the X platform that the head of the Polish government wrote in English.
On Tuesday, government spokesman Adam Szłapka announced that Prime Minister Donald Tusk will take part in an extraordinary EU summit on Greenland, which is planned for Thursday.
The President of the European Council Antonio Costa emphasized that the European Union countries support Denmark and Greenland, stand in solidarity with them, and unanimously assess that the tariffs threatened by US President Donald Trump would weaken transatlantic relations. Costa also stressed that the European Union is ready to defend itself against all forms of coercion.
At the beginning of January, Trump once again repeated his earlier rhetoric, according to which the United States should take full control of Greenland – the world’s largest island – not excluding the use of military force. He argued that US possession of this territory is crucial for national security. He warned that otherwise the island could be taken over by Russia or China.
On Saturday, the American leader further toughened his stance, announcing the possibility of imposing, from 1 February, an additional 10 percent tariff on eight European countries, including Denmark, for their attitude towards US claims to Greenland. In June, the tariffs are to rise to 25 percent and remain in force until the US concludes an agreement on the purchase of the island, which is an autonomous territory of Denmark. The American president linked this threat to these countries sending small military contingents to Greenland, which is an autonomous territory dependent on Denmark. (20.02.26)
