All About Food Allergies
About 6 percent of adults and 8 percent of children have food allergies, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The most common allergens are milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans, and sesame.
People who are sensitive to any of these allergens can have a reaction within minutes to hours of exposure. The resulting symptoms vary depending on the person, but they can be relatively mild—such as hives and rashes—or can be extreme and result in anaphylaxis, a severe and life-threatening response.
