The Romanian business community joins a new project of the European Commission – Trade Champions Network

Bucharest – The European network of economic champions, a project that contributes to bringing European trade policies closer to citizens, entrepreneurs, and local communities, brings together over 120 remarkable personalities from all EU member states – entrepreneurs, economists, opinion leaders, and professionals from various sectors.

They voluntarily and independently provide practical expertise to promote the benefits of international trade among those less familiar with the opportunities offered, facilitating the understanding of the EU’s trade agenda. At the same time, the network provides the Commission with a direct channel for feedback from local economic communities.

Romania is represented by a diverse team of 15 champions, with expertise in key areas of the modern economy – technology, energy, transport, media, education, industry, and consultancy – alongside representatives from the academic environment and employer organizations. The selection made by the European Commission Representation aimed at both professional diversity and gender balance.

“Through the Trade Champions network, we are building an authentic connection between European policies and the dynamics of the Romanian economy. We have credible Romanian voices, people with experience and passion for the European project, and we are grateful for their involvement. In a dynamic and complex global context, it is essential to communicate clearly about the benefits of international trade at the local level. Economic champions are those who will bring this message closer to people and will contribute to building a competitive, fair, and institutionally agile Europe,” said Ramona Chiriac, head of the European Commission Representation in Romania.

Network members emphasized strong common values and the need to accelerate the response speed of both Romania and the European Union to ensure economic competitiveness in the current global context. Priorities include simplifying and streamlining processes.

In the current international context, trade policy is becoming a strategic tool for competitiveness, economic security, and sustainability. The European Union currently has trade agreements with 76 countries and is actively negotiating new partnerships.

The European Trade Champions network will be officially launched on July 2, 2025, established by the Directorate-General for Trade (DG TRADE), and the local network will be coordinated at the national level by the European Commission Representation in Romania. (10.6.2025)
