The President of the ECB Christine Lagarde welcomes the design of the Bulgarian euro coin with a denomination of 1 euro

SOFIA – The President of the European Central Bank (ECB) Christine Lagarde welcomed the design of the Bulgarian 1 euro coin in a post on the social network “Facebook”.
“Exciting news for Bulgaria and the eurozone! Take a first look at the design of the Bulgarian one euro coin“, notes Lagarde in her post. The ECB President adds that the design of the coin maintains continuity with the current coins of Bulgaria and includes symbols that are deeply rooted in the country’s heritage and valued by its people.
Although we will have to wait a little longer to see these coins in circulation, this preview gives a glimpse of the beautiful national side chosen by the Bulgarian National Bank“, states Lagarde.
On the national side of the Bulgarian one euro coin, St. Ivan Rilski (c. 876-946) will be depicted – a Bulgarian spiritual leader who lived as a hermit monk, miracle worker, and heavenly protector of the Bulgarian people, founder of the Rila Monastery. To the right, there is an inscription in Cyrillic “БЪЛГАРИЯ”, and to the left of the image of the saint is an inscription in Cyrillic “ЕВРО” and the year of issuance.
The path to introducing the euro in Bulgaria was opened on June 4, 2025, when the European Commission and the ECB gave a positive assessment of the fulfillment of the criteria for joining the eurozone. On July 8, the Council of the European Union in the format of finance ministers (ECOFIN) finally approved Bulgaria’s accession to the currency area. Also on July 8, the European Parliament approved by a large majority the report on the introduction of the single European currency by Bulgaria. (August 13)
